Poon Choi @ Dragon-i

Poon Choi @ Dragon-i
Poon Choi @ Dragon-i

This Chinese New Year, Dragon-I releases its signature Chinese New Year delicacy -the Poon Choi or Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot, which is one of the most look forward dish all-year-round, save family from extensive cooking to feed guests and family members during dinners for 6 – 8 pax.

According to Wikipedia, the origins of Poon Choi dates right back from the late Song Dynasty when during the invasion of Mongolia, the young Chinese Emperor fled to Guangdong and Hong Kong. In order to serve the Emperor and the army, the locals gathered the best available food and cooked it in a wooden wash basin.

At Dragon-I, the Poon Choi is hong siew, soy sauced and pork rib soup based, bringing out the best in the flavours of the 18 premium ingredients served in the pot. Its ingredients are also fresh, which include premium mushrooms from Japan that is juicy and succulent to taste and with its diameter almost as long as our index finger. Prawns are big in size, fresh and absorbed the flavours of the soup, abalone, sea cucumber, scallops, dried Oysters, roast chicken, braised pork belly, golden money bags, pork balls, dried beancurd skin, yam, black moss, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, deep-fried beancurd skin and radish.

The Poon Choi takes about 2 – 4 hours to cook and an overnight preparation. Many diners order in advance and come and collect it from the restaurant. The take-away Poon Choi is presented in a steel carrier so that the heat is maintained and stainless steel carrier is more resistant towards impact.

Lap Mei Fan and Braised Mushroom and vegetables
Lap Mei Fan and Braised Mushroom and vegetables

Another highlight at Dragon-i, the Lap Mei Fan, is fragrant and the rice has thoroughly absorbed its flavours. Mix them together and you can taste the crisp of the rice which has a slight bitter burnt taste but ‘sweetened’ or othe ‘savourized’ (for the lack of  a better word) by the fragrance of the Chinese Sausage. A perfect combination and very well done. Eat this together with the juicy, huge premium braised mushroom from Japan and broccoli and this will become one of the most memorable dishes you have during the festive season.

Thinking of taking away some tidbits? Try the pineapple short cake from Taiwan also known as ‘wong lai soh’. Great as gifts for friends and family during house visitation or just self-consumption.

Paradise Inn in Sunway Pyramid

Within its luxurious interiors, Paradise Inn, located near the Blue Concierge at LG1, offers a gastronomic array of premium food offerings served with fresh ingredients.

Double Boiled Soup Water Goby with Fresh Apple Soup
Double Boiled Soup Water Goby with Fresh Apple Soup

This Chinese New Year, Paradise Inn’s highlights include the Double Boiled Soup with scallops which needs to be boiled for over 9-12 hours and then another 2 hours with its premium ingredients. Dig in a spoonful into the bowl and you will find mushrooms with its diameter as long as our index finger, chicken feet and meat, old cucumber, fresh fish and ‘fa kan’.

What jumped out at us in this delicious dish is the sweet savoury taste of the soup which has absorbed the flavours of the different ingredients in its liquid.

Fried Rice with Chinese Sausage and Mushrooms

Also featuring the best-seller Fried Rice with Chinese Sausage and Mushrooms or lap mei fan which is said to be a favourite among diners because of its ‘wok hei’ brings the dish to life.

Crispy Fried Crystal Prawns in Wasabi Mayo and Crispy Fried Crystal Prawn with Salted Egg.

Another highly recommended must-have dish in Paradise Inn is the Crispy Fried Crystal Prawns in Wasabi Mayo and Crispy Fried Crystal Prawn with Salted Egg, a lip-smacking experience which keeps you wanting more. The wasabi prawn is evenly spread  and surprised us with the creamy texture of the wasabi prawn and the sharp taste of the wasabi was a brief accentuation that compliments the dish extremely well, bringing out the freshness of the generous-sized, crispy prawn.

The salted egg prawn, on the other hand, is also a lip-smacking delight that will have egg-loving diners rejoice. The texture of the salted egg prawn is also creamy but in a rough, meshy, eggy texture which also compliments the generous-sized, crispy prawn.

Another must-have exclusive for diners who love chicken feet is the duck web. The duck web in this restaurant is praised for its elasticity and tasty flavourful texture that makes you want more.

Do remember to check out the pun choi in this restaurant, with a rich number of premium ingredients all in one pot including mushroom, prawn, scallops, vegetables, meat and more, rested in sweet tasting soup.

According to Paradise Inn, the pun choi soup base is either scallop based on pork-based. At Paradise Inn, the pun choi soup base is scallop base, which is rare as majority restaurants would use pork-base soup to compliment its fresh and premium ingredients.

So here is our recommendation on where to eat during Chinese New Year. Look out for another restaurant recommendation coming up next…
